How to Keep Your Pilates Classes Fresh

The Class Plan Instructor- Shauna with Pilates Resistance band

As Pilates instructors, we’re passionate about sharing the transformative power of this practice. Let’s remember why we got into it in the first place – we love it! But, let’s be honest, even the most dedicated students can experience a plateau if Pilates classes become too predictable. So, how do we keep our classes fresh, engaging, and inspiring?

Let’s dive into some practical strategies to reignite that spark. What’s more, we want to hear from you! Share your ideas in the comments below or on the Class Plan Forum.

But, in the meantime, let’s begin…

1. The Power of Variation:

Mix It Up:

While consistency is key, don’t be afraid to deviate from the standard sequence. Introduce variations of familiar exercises, explore different transitions, and play with the order of your flow. It keeps you interested and, in turn, that rubs off on your class.

For fresh imaginative exercises, you can find them weekly on the Class Plan app. New exercises are uploaded every week to keep your Pilates classes exciting- view the latest on the ‘New Exercises This Week’ section on your Home Page.

Prop Play

Props are your secret weapon! How often have we been in someone else’s class and they’ve found an ingenious way of utilising, say, a band or a ring and we’ve thought: “Oh, yeah! That’s cool!”

Incorporate resistance bands, Pilates rings, foam rollers, or even small, weighted balls. They add challenge, and variety, and can target specific muscle groups in new ways. In the Class Plan app, we offer imaginative ways of utilising all the small props that will keep your clients guessing what’s coming next.

Theme Your Pilates Classes:

Consider building classes around specific themes, such as “Spinal Mobility,” “Hip Stability,” or “Core Connection.” This provides a focused approach and keeps things interesting. At the Class Plan, we tag all our exercises in the library by ‘target area’ so you can easily filter and find plenty of exercises to work a particular part of the body. Making your class planning seamless and stress free.

Level Up (or Down):

Offer modifications and progressions to cater to different levels within your class. This ensures everyone feels challenged and supported, regardless of their experience. If you are unsure whether an exercise is suitable for a particular level visit the Class Plan app where we tag all our exercises by experience level making it clear which exercise is suitable for a beginner, all levels, or for an intermediate/advanced class. We also include the options of pre and post-natal.

2. Injecting Creativity & Inspiration:

Stay Curious & Learn:

Never stop learning! Attend workshops, explore different Pilates styles (classical, contemporary, etc.), and stay updated on the latest research. This will fuel your creativity and provide new ideas to incorporate into your classes.

Music Matters:

Music can significantly impact the energy and flow of your class. Experiment with different playlists and tempos to create the desired atmosphere. Consider instrumental music to avoid distracting lyrics.

Visual Cues & Imagery:

Use vivid imagery and clear visual cues to guide your students. Instead of just saying “engage your core,” try “imagine drawing your navel towards your spine like a corset.” These are the tips with which people truly engage.

Storytelling & Anatomy:

Share relevant anatomical insights and connect exercises to real-life movements. This helps students understand the “why” behind the exercises and enhances their body awareness.

3. Building Connection & Community:

Personalised Attention:

Take the time to observe each student and offer individual feedback. This shows that you care and help them improve their form. Also, remember their names. It shows you care.

Encourage Interaction:

Create a welcoming and supportive environment where students feel comfortable asking questions and sharing their experiences. At the Class Plan we foster a community spirit and our forum offers a platform to ask all your questions, no matter how big or small, to our Class Plan Pros and growing community of instructors.

Challenges & Workshops:

Organise mini-challenges or workshops focusing on specific skills or areas. This fosters a sense of community and provides opportunities for deeper learning. At Power Pilates, we’ve even hosted Sunday morning walks, where we grab a coffee and go for a stroll together through leafy Beckenham. You’ll feel that sense of community.

Feedback is Gold:

Regularly ask for feedback from your students. What are they enjoying? What could be improved? This shows that you value their input and are committed to providing the best possible experience.

4. Embrace Technology (Mindfully):

Online Resources:

Utilise online platforms to share resources, tutorials, or even short video clips of exercises. The Class Plan forum is a safe space to interact with like-minded pilates people and engage and share all our wealth of knowledge. No question is too small and our community will certainly provide the answers.

Apps & Timers:

Use apps to track time intervals, create custom playlists, or design workout routines. Our weekly Class Plans have Spotify playlists to complement them. And if you are using our Pro tier you have access to the Class Plans Spotify playlists. Making your class planning even smoother and your classes fun and impressive.

Virtual Classes:

Consider offering online classes to reach a wider audience or provide flexibility for students who can’t attend in person.

Remember, your Enthusiasm is Contagious!

Your passion for Pilates will naturally inspire your students. By consistently seeking new ways to challenge, engage, and connect with your class, you’ll create a vibrant and rewarding experience for everyone.
